I really, really, really love coffee. And I’ve read a lot about how it’s seriously threatened by climate change. This was all, unfortunately, confirmed in my interview with Dean Cycon of Dean’s Beans Coffee.
But he told me that I don’t really need to worry about coffee disappearing; big companies are already looking for ways to grow it in China. It’ll be more expensive, and it’ll taste worse, but coffee as we know it will continue.
The real worry is for coffee farmers, because life, as they know it, won’t continue. Millions of coffee farmers in the Global South will lose their crops and lose their land. They’ll likely become economic refugees, heading to the US or Europe.
Clearly, the impacts of climate change on coffee go far beyond what’s in my cup.
